Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in Jan Vertonghen but stressed that no talks have taken place with Ajax over a deal for the defender.
The Belgian's agent had previously stated that an
approach had been received from Tottenham, but Redknapp insists it is far too early to suggest that a move could go ahead.
While the Spurs manager admires Vertonghen, he knows there would be a lot of competition for his signature and is considering numerous other transfer targets.
"He is a good player, a player I have looked at and watched," said Redknapp.
"I think there are a lot of clubs interested in him though. So, that is all.
"We haven't gone anywhere with it. We haven't spoken to the club.
"He is just a player I have watched, along with a lot of other players."
Real character
Redknapp is keen to strengthen his squad in the summer but has not yet held talks with chairman Daniel Levy as he focuses on finishing the season as strongly as possible.
One player he would love to hold on to is Emmanuel Adebayor, who is due to return to parent club Manchester City at the end of his year-long loan.
Redknapp has previously admitted that he does not know whether a permanent deal would be possible, but he admits Adebayor's influence around the club has been invaluable.
Asked if he would like to keep the striker, who scored twice in Wednesday's 4-1 victory at Bolton, Redknapp said: "Of course I would.
"I love Adebayor. He is a real character and a good player.
"We will have to see what the summer holds. I haven't spoken to the chairman about players.
"We haven't sat down yet but he has done very well for us."
