Dons eye Gers striker

Aberdeen are weighing up a January bid for Rangers striker Steven Thompson.

Aberdeen are weighing up a January bid for Rangers striker Steven Thompson.

The Scotland international has never established himself as a first choice during almost three years at Ibrox.

The bulk of the former Dundee United ace's appearances for Rangers have come as a substitute and he has scored just 16 goals in the SPL.

He could now be offered the chance of more regular playing time by Aberdeen, who are anxious to pep up their attack.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood confirmed his interest in the 27-year-old and is waiting to see if Rangers would be receptive to a bid.

"Steven Thompson is one of the names in the frame, but there are a lot of others as well," Calderwood told the Aberdeen Evening Express.

"He's a Rangers player and it depends what they decide is happening."
