Newcastle have told Sky Sports News that they are not interested in signing Metz striker Diafra Sakho.

The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park but the club deny they are poised to complete a deal.

Sakho impressed last season in Ligue 2, scoring 20 goals in 37 games, as Metz earned promotion.

However, despite the prospect of Ligue 1 football, Sakho reportedly wants to leave and, with just a year left on his deal, could be available for around £2m.

But it looks like Newcastle have other options they prefer, as they seek to strengthen their forward line.

Strikers are believed to be a high priority for Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, last season’s loan signings Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong having departed.

And Shola Ameobi’s contract is not going to be renewed when it expires at the end of the month.

However, Hertha Berlin frontman Pierre-Michel Lasogga seems destined for Hamburg despite the Magpies' interest, while reports from France are suggesting that Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis, who has been monitored by Newcastle for a while, is heading for their Premier League rivals Swansea.
