Royals release five

Reading have confirmed Les Ferdinand and Martin Keown will be leaving the club.

Reading have confirmed that Les Ferdinand and Martin Keown are amongst the players who will be leaving the club in the summer.

Royals boss Steve Coppell have decided to release five players as they make plans to reshape their squad for next season.

Along with Ferdinand and Keown, Ricky Newman, Bas Savage and Louie Soares have all been informed they will not be offered new contracts.

Of Ferdinand and keown, Coppell told the club's official website: "They were both brought in to do a specific job this season.

"We never made the play-offs so I just feel that now is the time to finish it and they won't be offered new deals."

Also departing will be Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici who was on non-contract terms for the closing stages of the campaign, although Coppell has not ruled out a move for the custodian later in the summer if he fails to find a suitable replacement.

However, the former Crystal Palace boss has decided to offer fresh terms to Nicky Forster, Jamie Young, Simieon Howell and Darren Campbell - all of whom have been granted one-year extensions.

It is not guaranteed that Forster will opt to stay on, though, as the striker will consider other offers before committing himself to The Royals.

""He (Forster)'s in a situation now where he can go and see what else is out there," Coppell continued.

"He'll be doing that and won't commit to us until he's seen what's available."
