Radamel Falcao will be a bench player at Chelsea, says Jamie Redknapp

Radamel Falcao will spend most of this season on the bench after signing for Chelsea, according to Jamie Redknapp.

Chelsea have signed Falcao on a season-long loan deal from Monaco after the 29-year-old spent last term on loan with Premier League rivals Manchester United, where he struggled to make an impact.

Falcao is more likely to secure some silverware with his move to Stamford Bridge, but the Colombian striker will be a bit-part player rather than a starter for the champions, says Redknapp.

"He’s going to find himself on the bench an awful lot next year,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News HQ.

“I watched Radamel Falcao in his Atletico Madrid days and he was one of the best centre forwards I think I've ever seen.

“Now he's gone to Chelsea and probably what Chelsea need is a striker that's going to be happy not to play, and maybe have to fill in at times when there is an injury, because you look at the players he's going to be contending with like Diego Costa, who is going to be first choice.

"I think every Chelsea fan knows that. Then they've got Loic Remy.

“So what he (Falcao) is saying is ‘I’m happy to come and I’m happy to be part of the squad’.

“I find that a little frustrating, really. I think he’s a better player than that.

“It just feels to me that it’s a good move for Chelsea because they’re going to get a striker that’s happy not to play and he might be able to come in and make the impact on the odd occasion, but he’s not going to be starting too many games there if Diego Costa is fit.”

Meanwhile, Redknapp also predicted his former club Liverpool will "cash in" on winger Raheem Sterling soon.

“I certainly would (sell him)," Redknapp said.

"He doesn’t want to be at the club any more, it’s a shame that it’s working out this way but I can only see a situation where he will move on."
