Southend United are hopeful a deal can be agreed to sign Chelsea midfielder Anthony Grant.
Grant is currently training with the League One club and played 90 minutes in a recent friendly with Chelmsford.
He undertook a spell on loan at Southend last season and is available on a free transfer from Chelsea.
Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has held talks with the 21-year-old and is optimistic of reaching a deal with Grant.
"We're still in talks with Anthony and it's something we want to sort out," said Tilson.
"He did well for us last season and has done well in the friendlies he's played this year too, so hopefully he will be coming in."
