Australian defender pens six-year contract with Newcastle

Newcastle United have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season by bringing in Australian defender Curtis Good. The highly-rated centre-back, 19, arrives at the club on a six-year deal after making a positive impression during a recent trial. He has been signed from Melbourne Heart and will link up with his new team-mates when they return from their tour to Portugal this week. Newcastle have thanked Melbourne for their 'professionalism and cooperation' throughout the transfer and will now be looking to help Good develop further over the coming years. Good has already played for Australia at Under 19 level and has been tipped to gain full international honours. It has been clear from Newcastle's activity in the transfer market this summer that they are thinking about the long-term future, having also recruited fellow youngsters Gael Bigirimana and Romain Amalfitano. Alan Pardew has also been linked with higher-profile names such as Liverpool striker Andy Carroll and Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy, as he looks to build on Newcastle's fine achievement of finishing fifth last season.
