City boss sets sights on winning the Champions League

Roberto Mancini hopes Manchester City can continue on their 'cycle of success' and has targeted Champions League glory after winning the Premier League title this season. Mancini claimed his second piece of silverware with the club on Sunday as City defeated QPR 3-2 to beat rivals Manchester United to the title on goal difference. The achievement came a year after the Citizens won the FA Cup for the first time for over 30 years after beating Stoke City at Wembley. However, despite their wealth, Mancini's side endured a disappointing Champions League campaign in the 2011-12 season after being knocked out at the group phase. They also failed to progress to the latter stages in the Europa League after losing to Sporting Lisbon on away goals in the last 16. But Mancini has revealed that winning the Champions League will be the ultimate aim for the new campaign.

Next step

He said: "That's the next step. The first year was the FA Cup, the second the Premier League and I hope the third will be the Champions League. "We have started a cycle of success but to win the Champions League, it will take more. The Premier League is the most difficult league, the most competitive league in the world. "We've had to face very strong teams who, unlike us, had already won it in recent years. "But we always believed. For this reason our achievement is special and is thoroughly deserved."
