Lewis Hamilton has responded to a media furore over his champagne celebrations in China, and says his actions are through excitement.

Lewis Hamilton has played down the media furore after he was pictured spraying a grid girl with champagne after the Chinese GP, insisting that his actions were caused by “excitement” after his victory.

Pictures of Hamilton dousing the girl, 23-year-old grid girl Liu Siying, provoked a storm of controversy after a campaign group against sexism described his behaviour as "selfish and inconsiderate".

But after Siying herself shrugged off the incident, Hamilton has vowed he was only having fun after his win in Shanghai and wasn’t attempting to “embarrass” or “disrespect” her.
