Jenson Button still doesn't know when he'll find out if he's part of McLaren's plans for next season.

Jenson Button has told Sky Sports News HQ he still does not know if he will be retained by McLaren in 2015.

A final decision is expected to be taken during a board meeting at the Woking-based squad on Thursday and the fact that Button did not know as midday approached suggests further discussions are to be had amongst team management.

Fernando Alonso is expected to return to the team he left in 2007 meaning Button or Kevin Magnussen could miss out next year.

“That is a question I still cannot answer, I don’t know when we will all find out,” Button told Sky Sports News HQ when asked about his F1 future.

“I think for all of our sakes it is better sooner rather than later. I am here with Kevin as well and we have spent the last couple of days together and we’ve had some interesting conversations. Whatever way it goes it is better that we know sooner rather than later.

“If I am in Formula 1 next year it is obviously an exciting challenge with the new engine and the new atmosphere within the team, if I am not I’ve got other exciting challenges that I want to partake in so I wouldn’t worry about me. But it is just nicer to know sooner rather than later.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future and being made to wait by the team Button says he would have no hesitation in re-signing for McLaren should he be offered a deal.

Two-time McLaren F1 Champion Mika Hakkinen sympathises with the McLaren duo Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen as they wait to hear their fate

“I want to race at McLaren next year. I want to race in Formula 1,” he added.

“For me the last few months have been tricky, two months ago it was very difficult when my future was uncertain, but in the last few weeks I have had so much support from fans on social media and it really does mean a lot to me and has given me confidence and kept me relaxed in the decision making. I am in a good place, I really am and excited whichever way my future takes me.

“It is down to the board at McLaren to make the decision and I will respect their decision whatever way it goes. I have had a great career in Formula 1 which I would love to see continue. I have really enjoyed this year, I feel that we have a good base for a great future, obviously there are a lot of challenges ahead for the team with the new package, but it is an exciting new challenge and I am all for new challenges.”
