Marussia ask for 'patience and understanding' over Jules Bianchi updates

Team thankful for the "huge outpouring of support and affection for Jules" since Suzuka accident; Contrary to reports, Jules is not breathing unaided after surgery for severe head injuries

Marussia have asked for “patience and understanding” concerning updates on Jules Bianchi’s condition as the Frenchman fights for his life in intensive care after his crash in the Japanese GP.

Bianchi is currently in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Mie General Hospital having undergone surgery on Sunday night for the “severe” head injuries sustained when his Marussia car crashed into a recovery vehicle in wet conditions at Suzuka.

Although some reports on Sunday night had suggested that the 25-year-old was breathing unaided after his surgery, Sky Sports News HQ reported on Monday that this was not the case and Bianchi was connected to a respirator.

The Frenchman’s Marussia team have since issued a statement expressing gratitude for the huge outpouring of support towards the Frenchman over the last 24 hours and confirming any communication about the driver's health will be guided by the Bianchi family, who are flying out to Japan from the south of France on Monday.

Thoughts in the paddock are with Marussia driver Jules Bianchi following the Japanese GP.

“Following the accident involving Jules Bianchi during yesterday’s 2014 Formula One Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit, the Marussia F1 Team would like to acknowledge the huge outpouring of support and affection for Jules and the Team at this very difficult time,” the Marussia statement read.

“With regard to the communication of information concerning Jules’ medical condition, we will respect, and be guided by, the wishes of the Bianchi family. Together with Jules’ care, they will remain our highest priority. Therefore, we would ask for patience and understanding with regard to further medical updates, which will be communicated in conjunction with the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi, where Jules is being treated, when they feel it is appropriate.

“Representatives of the Marussia F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari will remain at the hospital to support Jules and the Bianchi family.”
