Rod Harrington says Cristo Reyes will inspire a new generation

The performance of outsider Cristo Reyes will inspire a whole new generation of players from Iberia, says Rod Harrington.

Tenerife thrower Reyes blasted a field of 154 players to win the Iberian qualifiers and reach the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.

And the 27-year-old followed up his shock first round victory against No 13 seed Wes Newton by seeing off 2004 finalist Kevin Painter.

With a last 16 clash against 'The Flying Scotsman' Gary Anderson to come, Reyes is guaranteed to walk away with a minimum of £18,000.

Soft tip players

"(Benito) Van de Pas, (Sascha) Stein and Reyes, we don't really know anything about them," said Sky Sports pundit Harrington.

Cristo Reyes becomes only the second preliminary player to reach the last 16

"They're literally soft tip players that have seen this on TV and thought 'do you know what, I'm going to have a go at this', and gone in the qualifiers in their relevant countries and won their qualifiers.

"They're coming here and we don't really know anything about them and of a sudden they've gone on the big stage and not been scared of the players they've played and they've done exceptionally well.

"This will be the most money Reyes will earn in years at darts, but hopefully what it will do in Spain is inspire other people to come and play in the system.

"We are starting to run qualifiers and tournaments throughout Europe now and that's how we grow the game."
