Chris Froome says his second-placed finish at the Vuelta a Espana has left him ‘hungry’ to win the Tour de France for a second time in 2015.
The Team Sky rider bounced back from breaking his wrist and hand when he crashed out of this year’s Tour to finish runner-up to Alberto Contador at the Tour of Spain, impressively taking the battle to some of the world’s top riders in the process.
Speaking in ‘100% Chris Froome’ – the latest Sky Originals documentary, which will air on Sky Sports 1 at 7pm on Sunday – he says he is now eager to turn his focus to next year.
“It’s been an amazing experience at this Vuelta. I’ve really taken a lot away from it and I think we all can as a team,” he said.
“The Tour is a long way away but it’s definitely there at the back of the mind and I look forward to seeing what route they’ve got for us.
“I’ve definitely come away from this Vuelta quite hungry and looking forward to getting stuck into next season.”
'100% Chris Froome' charts the highs and lows of Froome’s 2014 season, which saw him win the Tour of Oman, Tour de Romandie and stages at the Criterium du Dauphine before injury and crashes wrecked his Tour de France defence.
The documentary also follows his tilt at the Vuelta title and looks back at his career to date, from his childhood in Kenya and South Africa, through his early years racing in Europe and his triumph on the Champs Elysees at the 2013 Tour.
The programme features interviews with key players in Froome’s development, too, including Team Sky team principal Sir David Brailsford, who reckons the Brit’s display in Spain confirmed his position among the world’s elite cyclists – and demonstrated his determined character.
“One of the learnings for me is not only has Chris Froome got the strongest legs, within that small group of the best riders in the world, but my oh my has he got the strongest mind,” said Brailsford.
“The combination of those two is actually what differentiates him from a lot of other riders. Chris has proven here again that he is one of the very few top GC riders in the world and our aim now is to sit down and plot the route between now and next year’s yellow jersey.”
