Choosing characters to feature on Super League Super Men is a collaborative effort but it often sparks debate among the production team.

That's inevitable, I believe - every single member of our team is a rugby league fan, but we all come from different backgrounds and geographical regions and we all want our particular favourites to star in the show.

We were unanimous, however, over who should be first up this season.

Danny McGuire has been a first team regular for Leeds for over a decade and in that time he's contributed to many magical moments in the Rhinos' rise to glory. His story is one of a local lad made good; he grew up a rugby ball lob away from the amateur club at East Leeds and it was there his love of the game flourished.

At the tender age of 13 he was spotted by a Leeds scout and signed up by the Headingley club. He's been there ever since and couldn't be happier.

His career though hasn't been without its challenges, the most recent being his severe knee injury in 2010. In this clip from this week's Super League Super Men, Danny talks about that injury and how it happened, and the effect it had on him.

In the programme he goes on to talk candidly about the furore that exploded subsequently. Sky rugby league commentator Phil Clarke made a comment in his column here on skysports.com suggesting that the 'rugby gods' might have intervened in punishing Danny for the tackle on George Carmont which led to the injury. On SLSM Danny gives his reaction to those comments.

We also get an insight into the kind of man Danny is off the field with the work he does for a local kids' group, Leeds Mencap which helps, I think, give us a clearer picture of the personality behind the player.

Danny McGuire has never been a 'look at me' kind of chap, even though his skills and talent often put him in the spotlight. He's such a nice guy that even Brian Carney feels compelled to make a public apology, worth watching for that little bit of humble pie alone!

And the future for Danny once the playing career is over? Well, he hints towards a new career path altogether - a certain member of the SLSM team better watch out, someone's after your job.

Tune in for the first episode of Super League Super Men at 6.30pm, Thursday, Sky Sports HD4
