Hi! I’ve been asked to write a blog by Sky Sports over the next few months and I hope you’ll enjoy reading it. Hopefully I’ll be able to give you an insight into life as a women's footballer and also some of my own opinions of a number of different things - not just football!
I’ll start by talking about women’s football and more importantly Notts County Ladies. I was extremely proud to have signed for the team at the beginning of the year and had a really enjoyable and intense pre-season. Notts County Ladies are a brand new team with great ambition and organisation. I was given the chance to train everyday with amazing coaching staff and players, who could really turn that opportunity down?
It was hard work but it was something that I have dreamt about as a kid. To wake up every day and go into work when ‘work’ is something you love so much, I felt extremely privileged.
It was great once the running had stopped and we could finally put the hard work into proper practice in a match situation. We played a few friendlies and I felt really sharp and full of confidence - so I was gutted to get injured before the start of the season.
I won’t bore you with the details but deep down I knew straight away that I had done something pretty serious. I was right - I had ruptured by ACL, torn my cartilage, suffered bone bruising and sprained my medial ligament. It’s now just over three weeks since my operation.
Being injured is rubbish - my team-mates have been awesome but nothing beats being with them day in and day out. I miss the banter and I can’t wait to be back with the girls in the gym and on the pitch again. My family have been great, especially my fiancé - I’m not sure how he puts up with me day in and day out but he’s been a rock over the last month or so.
I am slowly progressing but it is going to take time, I am not going to rush though as I hope to come back, fitter, faster and stronger than ever.
It’s hard to sit and watch the girls play, but to be honest I am more proud than anything - they are my friends, it’s my team and I want each and every one of them to be great. I feel like I have aged about 20 years from watching the matches so far though, it’s an emotional roller coaster every game, but that’s why football is the best sport - you never know what will happen.
The team has done really well so far this season, I don’t want to tempt fate but I know - and the team knows - we have more to give. We were unfortunate not to reach the FA Cup final but that heartache will hopefully stand us in good stead going forward and we can learn from that semi-final defeat.
This weekend saw the last games of the FA WSL before the mid-season break - a month without football, what am I going to do? But I’m really looking forward to the start of the men’s World Cup. COME ON ENGLAND!
Notts County Ladies’ last match for the first half of the season was against Chelsea, where we drew 0-0. It probably sounds like it was a boring game but we played some of the best football I have seen this season and it was really disappointing to come away with the draw.
We had chances but weren't clinical when we needed it, plus the Chelsea keeper was pulling off some superb saves. However, we cannot be downcast or disheartened, we are a new team who are unbeaten in the league and currently 3rd in the table. Bring on the second half of the season!
In other results this weekend, Birmingham gained a valuable point against WSL champions Liverpool to keep them top of the table. I watched Birmingham against Arsenal (they won 2-0 midweek) and they showed what a great side they are - they are definitely title contenders. Other results saw Bristol Academy beat Arsenal 2-0, which pushed them just below Birmingham in the league and left Arsenal with one point at the bottom of the table.
The final result saw Manchester City beat Everton 2-0 in midweek – they are definitely coming into some good form before the break. There is a lot to play for in the second half of the season, and I can't wait.
Please let me know how you found my blog and what you would like to see me talk about, I am open to talk about different things, but within reason! My twitter name is: @ellsbells89
Thank you for reading.
