Reading teammates and neighbours Chris Gunter and Garath McCleary may have helped Reading beat Forest 3-2 on Friday night but it was a sheepish Gunter who had to explain his red card.

Gunter was shown a second yellow card after tripping Mackie on the edge of the box but insists he should not have been sent off.

"The gaffer asked me what had happened - his eyesight is not that great. Once we saw it on the video we could see that it was not a red card," said Gunter on Soccer AM.

Gunter was left even more red-faced after Soccer AM delved into the archives and showed some footage of his diving during Reading's match against QPR last year.

"I used to play with Jermaine Jenas at Tottenham and I did apologise straight afterwards to him, it was just one of those - we had done a few overlaps and my legs were struggling. I thought he was going to stick a leg out and I thought I had to go over - he didn't and I looked like an absolute idiot."

We decided that we had given Chris enough stick and decided to move onto better things.

Reading's win meant they moved up to fourth in the Championship and McCleary said the club were desperate to get back into the top flight.

"We had a taste of the Premier League last year and we want to get back there. I think we have played really well in spells - especially yesterday in the first half we did really well. It could be our year but there are a lot of good teams in the Championship. It's a tough league - bottom could beat top, there are a number of teams that could be promoted this year. Every game is very tough."

Gunter and McCleary are good mates now - in fact they live next door to each other, however their friendship did not get off to the best of starts.

"I went on loan to Forest from Tottenham and as you do on your first day, I just sat in the change room and mind your own business. G has walked in from breakfast and one of the lads has told him to say hello - he's just blanked me. He went to the toilet and then came up to me and said hello.

"A month later he told me that the reason he did not say hello was he thought I was on work experience!"
