Rangi Chase says his moment of brilliance in Salford Red Devils’ win over Hull FC was completely off the cuff.

The New Zealand-born half-back turned on the magic in the Red Devils’ win over Hull FC, producing some audacious skills to send Josh Griffin over for a try with 15 minutes remaining.

“I don’t think you can just plan for that,” Chase told Sky Sports News HQ.

“You’ve only got a few seconds to make a decision. I had to try and make out to the wing that I was going to take the ball up, and being that far out from the goalline, he’s got to make a decision whether to come in.

“The only way I could pass the ball was to flick it behind my back. It came off and created the space for Josh Griffin on the wing, and he did well to score. I used to practice those things when I was a little kid so I’m glad it came off.

“I am flattered to be honest. I do it at training, so without being big-headed, I know I can do it. It is humbling though.”

Chase created four of Salford’s six tries in the 32-28 victory but he says it does not rank as one of his best ever performances.

“I let a couple of tries in and gave them a chance to win it at the end when I kicked the ball out on the full,” he said.

“People see all the good things but I know what I need to work on. I made a few mistakes in the game that could have gone the other way. I’m not kidding myself by saying it’s my best game.”
