Usain Bolt: A one man news generator

Sky Sports News' Orla Chennaoui reports from Glasgow where she examines the impact the world’s fastest man is having on the Commonwealth Games.

In case you hadn’t noticed, Usain Bolt is kind of a big deal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

He’s a big deal pretty much everywhere he goes of course, but given the way he’s dominated both front and back pages here in the past week, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that until last night, he still hadn’t started what he’s ostensibly here to do.

But then, running anchor leg of a 4x100m relay is hardly the stuff of headlines. Unless you’re Usain Bolt that is, fastest man on the planet and one man news generator.

Arguably it’s for this reason that his presence here has really been needed, and fed upon with frenzy.

If Bolt’s focus was purely performance-based, then arriving at the Games six days before competition, spending all that time in the athletes’ village, taking time for Royal photo-shoots etc etc would all be unwelcome distractions.

Instead it’s part of the very reason he’s here.

From journalists asking for selfies and ‘splashing’ his every utterance (or non-utterance according to who you believe) to volunteers suspended for indulging in the aforementioned selfies, Bolt has caused a stir wherever he’s gone, whatever he’s done.

Which is why it came as no surprise to anyone that he received such an uproarious welcome at Hampden Park last night. The fans are delighted to have him here, and simply want to see the big man strut his stuff.

For those who were happy to bask in the balmy moment and enjoy watching an icon of the sport in action, it was worth the wait. Huge cheers at the mention of his name in the stadium, even louder cheers as the Jamaican covered the home strait with his characteristically long, loping strides.

If there was any disquiet over suggestions he may not have been enamoured with Glasgow they were drowned out by the roar of the crowd last night.

Oh, and Jamaica won their heat by the way, which does matter of course, because it means he gets to put on a repeat display all over again tonight.

Sport stars often get into trouble when they let their words rather than performances do the talking. That’s as much our fault as theirs of course, but with the two combined, Usain Bolt’s presence at these Commonwealth Games has hardly gone unnoticed.

For many, that in itself is a successful result.
