Memphis Depay: Why Manchester United have targeted PSV winger

Memphis Depay celebrates his winner

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign PSV winger Memphis Depay. Here's all you need to know about the talented 21-year-old...

Depay has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in Europe and it's easy to see why. The attacker was the top scorer in Netherlands' Eredivisie this season, scoring 21 goals to help fire PSV to the title.

The wide player's goal-haul - which includes numerous long-range drives - has attracted plenty of attention this term but he's a player Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal knows well.

Van Gaal gave him his international debut for Netherlands in 2013 and watched on from the dugout as he scored twice during last summer’s World Cup, where Depay was named on the shortlist for young player of the tournament.

Van Gaal was then in Amsterdam in March to see Depay shine in his country's 2-0 win over European champions Spain - and the performance further emphasised the fact that the PSV youngster is a player of vast potential.

Current Oranje coach Guus Hiddink is a confirmed admirer. "Depay has the potential to become Netherlands' best player," he told NOS. "I've noticed that he has even more potential than I first thought now that I'm working with him. He is incredibly interested and keen to learn."

Early days

A product of PSV’s youth system, Depay has represented Netherlands from the under-15 age group upwards and scored in the final of the under-17 2011 European Championships to help his country to victory over Germany.

His club debut followed later that year, with Depay netting twice in his first appearance, a cup game against amateur side VVSB.

His first taste of Eredivisie action came in February 2012 and he went on to make 20 top flight appearances in the 2012/13 campaign. However, it was the following season when Depay began to make headlines, scoring 12 times in 32 appearances in the league to help PSV to fourth-place.

Depay’s form earned him a spot in Netherlands’ World Cup squad and he became the youngest Dutchman to score at the showpiece when he netted the winner against Australia, aged 20 years and four months.

A stellar campaign has followed this term as PSV lifted the title for the first time since 2008 - and Depay's form has earned him a move to the Premier League.
