Latest under our scout's gaze is Borussia Dortmund's Neven Subotic - recommended by Sky Sports reader Kevin Patrick.

The scout reports...

Neven Subotic is one of Borussia Dortmund's young stars who is currently helping them to take the Bundesliga by storm.

But Subotic's road to becoming one of Europe's top young defenders has been a complicated one.

Having been born in Bosnia, he moved to Germany when aged just five. This is when Subotic began taking an interest in football and was attached to TSV Schwarzenberg.

A couple of years later, though, his family were deported but instead of moving back to Bosnia, they went to America and settled in Florida.

Subotic then trained in a local park by himself, but was spotted by United States Under-17 assistant coach Keith Fulk who recommended him to his boss John Ellinger, who then organised for a move to the University of South Florida.

While playing for USA Under-17 side during a tournament in Holland, he was spotted by an English agent, who got him a trial with Bundesliga side Mainz - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Subotic was snapped up by Mainz and soon became a regular in Jurgen Klopp's side. He then moved to Dortmund in 2008 and it was little surprise when he persuaded his current employers to sign him.

It was also just after joining Dortmund that the question of his international allegiance arose, and that had USA, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Germany all looking at him.

He had previously played for USA's youth sides, but at senior level he pledged his future to Serbia, where his father's family originates from and he made his debut for his new nation in mid-2009.

He penned a five-year deal when he arrived at Dortmund, but such was his progress he was rewarded with an improved contract just 12 months later.

Subotic has now emerged as one of Borussia's big stars and as they look on course for the Bundesliga title in 2011 he is emerging as one of Europe's most talented stoppers.

Deceptively tall, at first glance he does not look the 6ft 4in he is, mainly because he is anything but awkward and is graceful in nearly every aspect of his game.

Dominant in the air as you expect for anyone of that height, he has many strings to his bow that make him stand out above the average central defender.

The whole technical side of his game is very good, which along with his physical presence makes him a real class act.

He can pass the ball out of defence, but can also bring it out as required and there is no panic, indeed he could easily play in midfield if required.

Because of his age, the odd error is still around in his game but his pace means he is very rarely caught out.

The scout says...

It is little wonder Europe's elite really want Subotic. Chelsea only this month failed with a near £20million bid, as Borussia know just what they have.

The fact Dortmund look set to be in the Champions League next year, means they have every chance of keeping him for a little longer.
