Virgil van Dijk says he is in no hurry to leave an 'amazing' club like Celtic

Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk has given his strongest hint yet that he could remain with the club next season.

Van Dijk has been outstanding for Ronny Deila's side this campaign, forming a defensive partnership with on-loan Belgium international Jason Denayer conceding just 14 goals in 28 matches.

The Dutch defender has been linked with a move to the Premier League - with Southampton and Sunderland reportedly interested - but Van Dijk is in no hurry to leave the treble-chasing Scottish champions.

Every player wants to develop but I know, like everyone, Celtic is an amazing club, a very big club, and you don't want to leave Celtic for a lesser club.

Speaking ahead of Friday's trip to St Mirren, he said: "Every player wants to develop but I know, like everyone, Celtic is an amazing club, a very big club, and you don't want to leave Celtic for a lesser club.

"There was a lot of speculation and a lot of talk last summer that I wanted to leave and everyone was not so positive around me.

"But I just enjoy playing here. I am still only 23 and I am learning every day and until the time is there I just want to talk about Celtic and nothing else.

"We will see what happens in the summer but as it looks right now I am still here."

When pressed on whether he would consider a move away from Parkhead, whether this summer or any time in the near future, he replied: "I am in no rush.

"However, if the opportunity is there you never know because it is football. But what I say right now is 'I'll just focus on Celtic'.

"I want to to win the treble, I'm enjoying every game, and that is what every player wants, so I am in a very good place," added Van Dijk, who has scored three goals in 26 Premiership appearances for the Hoops this season.
