Transfer news: Middlesbrough are close to signing Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton

Middlesbrough expect to complete "the final stages" of their deal to sign Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton on Wednesday.

The Teessiders have announced the deal, which involves Boro midfielder Jacob Butterfield moving in the opposite direction, is close to being finalised.

A brief statement on Middlesbrough's official website read: "Boro are in the final stages of completing the transfer of 25-year-old Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton, with Jacob Butterfield expected to move in the opposite direction.

"The clubs hope to put the finishing touches to the move (on Wednesday)."

The two clubs are understood to have agreed a reported fee of £1.5million, rising to £2million with add-ons, for the former Manchester City and Leeds player, who will undergo a medical on Wednesday.

Clayton progressed through Manchester City's academy and after loan spells at Carlisle and Leeds completed a permanent move to the latter in 2010.

He had further loan spells at Peterborough and MK Dons before securing a move to Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2012.

Former Barnsley midfielder Butterfield is reported to have already held talks with Huddersfield.

Butterfield, a product of Barnsley's academy, signed for Norwich in July 2012 following the expiry of his contract at Oakwell and moved on to Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee in September 2013.
