Novak Djokovic came from two sets down to square his fourth-round match against Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon and force a Tuesday decider.
The defending champion was in big trouble as the 14th seed's power hitting saw him take each of the first two sets on a tie-break.
But the third went Djokovic's way in just 24 minutes, and a single break was good enough to earn him the fourth in the south London gloaming before a halt was called with the score 6-7 (6/8), 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 6-4.
Djokovic did well to survive the evening at all as Queen's Club finalist Anderson came out firing, losing just four points on first serve in the opening set and hitting 38 winners to the top seed's 18 in the first two combined.
Even when Djokovic clawed back a second-set break to force a breaker and then built a 4-1 lead, Anderson fought back to take it with a delicate backhand volley.
But Anderson's first-serve percentage plummeted in the third and the Serb took full advantage, taking it without a single unforced error.
The South African steadied himself in the fourth, but a poor volley saw him drop serve in the third game, and Djokovic maintained a high level to keep his opponent at arm's length for the rest of the set.
And a winning forehand set up a shootout on Tuesday for the right to face Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals.
The No 1 crowd jeered when play was suspended rather than moved under the Centre Court lights, but Wimbledon organisers later defended the decision to take the match into a second day.
A statement read: "Regarding Djokovic/Anderson not being moved to Centre: Ideally, tournament scheduling aims to finish a match on the court it started.
"With no urgent need to finish the match tonight, both Djokovic & Anderson were happy to resume at 1pm on No 1 Court tomorrow."
