A small fire broke out inside Wimbledon's Centre Court building on Wednesday evening, forcing spectators to be evacuated after play had ended for the day.

The electrical fire started inside a mechanical room in the east side of the building, emergency vehicles arrived shortly after the fire alarm went off and a public address announcement told everyone in or near the stadium to leave the area.

Serena Williams had just finished off her win over Timea Babos on Centre Court and was holding a news conference in an adjacent building when the evacuation began.

No smoke could be seen from outside Centre Court and there were no reported injuries.

London Fire Brigade said 3,000 people were told to leave the grounds as a precaution following a small blaze in a plant room.

The fire brigade said the blaze was brought under control shortly after 10pm, just over an hour after they were first called
