Maria Sharapova: Set for second round clash with Alexandra Dulgheru
Maria Sharapova will hope for a smooth passage through to the third round when she plays Alexandra Dulgheru at the US Open on Wednesday.
The 2006 champion made a slow start to her opening match against Maria Kirilenko on Monday night but quickly turned things around to register a 6-4 6-0 victory.
The main focus on day three of the tournament will be on the bottom half of the women’s singles draw, with many of the top seeds in second round action.
As well as Sharapova, who is last on in the afternoon session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, second seed Simona Halep faces Jana Cepelova in the third match at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
First up on Louis Armstrong is fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who is not expected to be troubled when she faces Shuai Peng.
Two-time champion Venus Williams plays in one of the night games at Arthur Ashe, with Swiss player Timea Bacsinszky her opponent. The two players have only faced each other once before, Williams winning the clash at the Beijing Olympics six years ago.
Home hope Sloane Stephens faces Johanna Larsson in the first match of the day at Arthur Ashe while No 9 seed Jelena Jankovic and 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki are both scheduled to play on Grandstand, against Tsvetana Pironkova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich respectively.
Two men’s seeds are fortunate enough to be able to get their second round contests out of the way on Wednesday, with Stanislas Wawrinka’s clash against Thomaz Bellucci being the most prominent.
The Australian Open champion faces the Brazilian in the second match of the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium. No 30 seed Jeremy Chardy plays Blaz Kavcic on Court 11.
The rest of the men’s action on day three comprises of first round matches. Sixth seed Tomas Berdych will play 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt in the second match at Arthur Ashe.
At Louis Armstrong, Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic, who both went well at Wimbledon this year, begin their campaigns against Marcos Baghdatis and Ryan Harrison respectively.
