Venus Williams was knocked out of the US Open by China's Zheng Jie after the pair slugged it out for more than three hours.

Jie outlasted the seven-time Grand Slam champion 6-3 2-6 7-6 (5), despite a remarkable fightback from the 33-year-old American to push the match into a deciding tiebreak.

Deadlocked 5-5 in the tie-breaker, 60th-ranked Williams sent a backhand volley into the net to give 56th-ranked Zheng her first match point chance. When Williams sent a backhand wide, Zheng jumped for joy in triumph.

"Today is tough match for me. Unbelievable I can beat her," Zheng said. "The second set I lost my concentration and she played so great.

"Sorry guys. Venus (Williams) she is a very good player but I wanted to win also."

"The final set we were fighting each other. I think this is very good for me and will help me for the next match."

Zheng, who lost her only prior match against Williams in the second round in Miami in 2004, will play for a berth in the round of 16 against Spanish 18th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Williams, the 2000 and 2001 US Open champion, missed the chance of making her first third-round appearance since 2010.

Zheng, 30, apologised to Williams' supporters after the match, saying: "Sorry guys. Venus she is a very good player but I wanted to win also."
