Laura Robson will face Li Na in round three at the US Open
Great Britain's Laura Robson is through to the third round of the US Open for the second year in a row after a 6-4 7-6 win over Caroline Garcia of France.
The 30th seed found was made to show her mettle, saving a pair of set points in the second set and then winning the subsequent tie-break 7-5 to secure a hard-fought victory in New York.
Both players held serve fairly comfortably at first and a tie-break looked on the cards when Garcia was 40-15 up at 5-6, only for Robson to hit some great returns and force the break which gave her the opening set.
The second set followed a similar pattern, both players performing well when needed to hold their own serve until Garcia broke through at 5-5, setting up three break points with a backhand winner and breaking two points later when Robson double faulted.
Serving to level the match, Garcia showed no nerves at first, racing into a 40-15 lead, only to squander her first set point with a double fault.
Robson then produced some fine hitting to save the second set point and went on to seal the break-back with a clean return winner.
Garcia made the better start to the tie-break and claimed a 2-0 lead but then lost her way again and Robson reeled off six points in a row before double-faulting when presented with four match points.
Suddenly inspired, Garcia saved another match point with a lovely forehand volley and then hit a brilliant winner off the same wing to make it 5-6 but Robson got a good serve in when she really needed one and Garcia's forehand return went long.
Robson will now face China's Li Na, the fifth seed, who she memorably defeated 6-4 6-7 6-2 at the same stage of this tournament last year.
