Agnieszka Radwanska and Li Na managed to reach the second round of the US Open before a rain delay during day three at Flushing Meadows.

Radwanska, the third seed for the final slam of the season, saw off Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain 6-0 7-5 thanks to 38 unforced errors and 10 double faults from her opponent.

The Pole breezed through the first set in a mere 21 minutes, though she was made to work a little harder in the second before finally seeing off a player ranked 103 in the world.

She will next face Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who knocked out Australian Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.

Li, meanwhile, comfortably defeated Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 6-2, winning both sets in 32 minutes.

The fifth seed from China sent down four aces and converted five of her 10 break-point opportunities during her opening match in New York.

"I was so lucky before the rain came that I finished the match so I don't have to wait and warm up and come to the court again. It is tough for (everyone else)," she said afterwards.

"For me, I'll just relax for the rest of the day and do whatever I want to do."

18th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro progressed, beating American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3 6-4.

Matches cancelled

Serena Williams was among the players who had their matches cancelled as rain disrupted the US Open in New York.

Play was suspended just before 1pm local time because of the threat of lightning and rain quickly followed.

Only a few minutes of play were possible over the next four hours and at 5.10pm organisers announced several women's matches had been cancelled.

Eighth seed Angelique Kerber, ninth seed Jelena Jankovic and Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki also had their matches cancelled along with Martina Hingis, who was due to partner Daniela Hantuchova in the doubles in her first grand slam match for six years.
