Angelique Kerber: Coming off a quarter-final run at the All England Club
Kerber is a solid operator and a former US Open semi-finalist who has shown some encouraging form in recent months.
The German, who turned professional in 2003, has a well-rounded game with no glaring weaknesses. She operates mainly from the baseline and is among the best returners of serve in the women's draw.
She broke into the elite at Flushing Meadows in 2011 by reaching the last four, where she went down in three sets to eventual champion Samantha Stosur.
That run triggered a breakthrough campaign in 2012 which saw her rise into the top 10 and equal her best result at a major, losing in the semi-final of Wimbledon to Agnieszka Radwanska.
Over the next two years she failed to progress past the fourth round of any of the grand slams until her recent run to the last eight of Wimbledon, which was complemented by runner-up finishes in Eastbourne and Stanford.
