Simona Halep: Has been a breakout star over the last 18 months

Simona Halep: Has been a breakout star over the last 18 months

Simona Halep is returning to the tournament where, a year ago, her quarter-final performance enabled her to crack the top 10 for the first time.

A remarkable rise over the past 12 months that peaked with a world No 2 ranking will now culminate back at the Australian Open where Halep enters as the third seed.

Perhaps unlike the 2014 tournament, Halep is now a major threat for the championship having tasted Grand Slam finals for the first time last year.

Her defeat to Maria Sharapova in the French Open final in May was a significant step in Halep confirming herself among the world’s elite.

A semi-final showing at last summer’s Wimbledon ended in defeat to Eugenie Bouchard but the highest ranked Romanian player of all time comes into the Australian Open in good form.

In October she inflicted Serena Williams’ worst ever defeat, restricting the legend to just two games in two sets, at the WTA Finals.

And Halep showed why she is among the favourites to lift a first major by dominating Timea Bacsinszky in a 6-2 6-2 rout in the Shenzhen Open final for her ninth WTA career title.
