Serena WIlliams: Is bidding for a third straight US Open title

World No 1 Williams has not looked as unstoppable as she did last year but is coming into form at the right time ahead of the US Open

The American added a 17th grand slam to her glittering portfolio when she won last year’s title at Flushing Meadows, but that remains her last major title.

Williams bowed out in the last 16 of the Australian Open to Ana Ivanovic and, even more shockingly, lost in the second round of the French Open to Garbine Muguruza.

The run of upsets continued at Wimbledon, where she reached round three before Alize Cornet sent her crashing out.

Williams did take victory in Miami and Rome in the spring and, after the poor run, showed she was still very much a force to be reckoned with by clinching titles in Stanford and Cincinnati prior to the US Open.

Williams has a fine pedigree in New York, where she will be attempting to win for a third straight time. She has taken five titles in total.
