Rafael Nadal: Last match at Australian Open was epic final against Novak Djokovic
After enjoying a remarkable comeback season in 2013, Nadal returns to Melbourne looking for his second Australian Open title.
The Spaniard missed the first grand slam of the season last year, pulling out due to a stomach virus having already been sidelined for several months with a knee injury.
But his form when he returned to the circuit was spectacular. From February until October he reached the final of every tournament he played bar one, picking up the French and US Open crowns along the way.
He also won five Masters 1000 events and his stunning defeat to Steve Darcis in the first round of Wimbledon was the only major hiccup.
Nadal's form did seem to slide a little towards the end of the year and it remains to be seen whether he can recapture the aura of invincibility he seemed to possess in the middle part of 2013.
A victorious campaign in January would see the 27-year-old become only the third man after Rod Laver and Roy Emerson to win each grand slam title twice. Nadal took the title Down Under in 2009 and was beaten in an epic final by Novak Djokovic in 2012.
Clay-court tennis is Nadal's bread and butter but his forehand is just as potent whatever the surface and he is able to adapt the rest of his game to quicker conditions.
