Nicolas Almagro: Was on the brink of reaching the semi-finals last year
Almagro regressed slightly in 2013 after beginning the year fighting for place in the world's top 10.
Almagro's best results have always come on clay. Indeed, all 12 of his ATP titles have come on the dirt and he has not even reached a final on any other surface.
Possessing a big forehand, Almagro has admittedly also had some decent hard-court results and his run to the last eight of the Australian Open last year equalled his best effort at a grand slam.
He was two sets up and served for the match three times in his last-eight clash with David Ferrer but could not get over the line, a result which seemed to dent his confidence in the subsequent months.
He made it to the semi-finals of three other ATP 500 events but did not threaten to take any major wins.
He has a beautiful single-handed backhand but is classed very much as an outsider when the grand slam events come around.
