Former world number one Ana Ivanovic claimed the WTA Monterrey Open title as she defeated Jovana Jaksic in straight sets in the all-Serbian final.

Second seed Ivanovic, who knocked out Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in the semi-finals, came back after a slow start and moved past the unseeded Jaksic, 20, in an hour in Mexico for her 13th career title.

After losing the first six points of the match - including dropping serve at love in the opening game - 26-year-old Ivanovic quickly regrouped, winning 16 of the next 17 points to beat her compatriot for her second title this year.

Ivanovic, who also won in Auckland back in January, told wtatennis.com: "I think we both enjoyed the final tonight - it was very special for our country, it was the first time two players from our country were in a WTA final together.

"It was also great to see Jovana doing so well this week. I think she definitely has a bright future ahead of her.

"Last year I lost very early here in Monterrey but I had so much fun that I wanted to come back, so to make it this far this year is amazing. And every title is so special.

"I had some tough matches this week but I feel so happy to get through each of them, and this title is definitely one of my favorites."

Jaksic was delighted to reach her first WTA final, and said: "My feelings are so mixed up right now.

"I am sad because I lost the final, but I have nothing to be upset about because it was an amazing week for me.

"This is what we dream about, to make finals like this, and to play against a true champion and one of the best players in the world was just a dream come true.

"It's tough to play against friends, but I think we played a really good match tonight, and I'm really proud of myself because I did my best this week and have nothing to regret."

Jaksic admitted it was also a big night for Serbia, adding: "This was history. This is a big thing in Serbia and we are both so proud because we love playing for Serbia.

"I want to thank all the fans in Serbia who stayed awake to watch the match."
