GB Fed Cup captain Judy Murray believes more women are needed across the board in order to significantly increase female participation in sport.

Murray has worked tirelessly in recent years to provide more opportunities for females to get involved in sport, including the launch of her Miss-Hits tennis initiative last summer.

And Murray, who has helped guide the career of son Andy, ranked No 3 in the world, insists there is a shortage of women in key position in the sports industry.

“There aren’t enough of them,” she told the Sportswomen show on Sky Sports News HQ. “There aren’t enough female coaches and there aren’t enough female PE teachers.

“If we really want to grow the numbers of girls getting into sport, we need more female drivers of activity and more females in decision-making positions within governing bodies.

“Women will make things happen for girls because they understand the needs, behaviours and emotions of girls and they’re much more passionate about it.”

Murray was speaking at a Women’s Sport Week Miss-Hits event in Liverpool, aimed at stimulating a growth in tennis participation amongst girls and female coaches.

“Women’s Sport Week is all about raising the profile of women in sport and to keep women in sport,” she said.

“Miss-Hits is a fun starter tennis programme for kids aged five to eight. It’s an all-girl programme aimed at girls who come into tennis at entry-level but it also aims to increase the number of female coaches we have at entry level in our sport.

“Female coaches are so important not just to attract females into the game but for keeping them in the game.”
