Russia's Mikhail Youzhny came back from the brink to defeat former champion Lleyton Hewitt in the fourth round of the US Open.

Youzhny, a two-time semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows, prevailed 6-3 3-6 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 7-5 in a match lasting two minutes short of four hours.

Australian Hewitt, who lifted the title in New York 12 years ago, wasted a 4-1 lead in the fourth set and was broken when serving for the match at 5-3 in the decider.

Youzhny reeled off the last five games in a row to book a quarter-final date with top seed Novak Djokovic.

"It was a great atmosphere and a joy to play here. I fought back in the fourth and fifth sets because I didn't want to be heading home just yet," said Youzhny, who at 31 is a year younger than Hewitt.

"The crowd wasn't against me but for Lleyton. It gave me power to keep coming back.

"Lleyton is a great player. When he is on the court he always fights. He's still a top player and can beat top players like (Juan Martin) Del Potro (in the second round). It was very tough for me to beat him for just the second time."

Hewitt said: "Obviously, it could have gone either way. There were a lot of momentum changes right from the start.

"It was hard for both of us to hold our serves at times. In the end, he played the big games well when he needed to. He didn't give me too many cheap errors.

"It's obviously disappointing to lose but I left it all out there, there's not a whole heap more I could have done."
