Broady, Bambridge out; Edmund, Ward-Hibbert progress

There were mixed fortunes for the British juniors at the Australian Open on Tuesday. Last year's Wimbledon runner-up Liam Broady suffered a surprise defeat, while Luke Bambridge also bowed out, but there were wins for Kyle Edmund and Joshua Ward-Hibbert. Broady, the third seed, was well beaten by Czech Robin Stanek, losing 6-4 6-1. Bambridge's loss was more expected as he was up against fourth-seeded Kaichi Uchida and duly lost 6-4 7-6 (10/8). However, Edmund and Ward-Hibbert lifted British spirits as they both moved into the third round in Melbourne. Seventh seed Edmund, part of the team which captured the Junior Davis Cup last season, overcame a shaky start to power past Pol Toledo Bague 4-6 6-1 6-1. And Ward-Hibbert took out eighth seed Stefano Napolitano with an impressive 6-3 6-4 success. Both remaining Britons will play their last-16 matches on Wednesday.
