Skysports.com readers have voted overwhelmingly in support of Bradley Wiggins being named the Sports Personality of the Year.

The Team Sky rider is Sky Bet's 2/5 favourite to claim the award after rewriting history in 2012, becoming the first ever British winner of the Tour de France before going on to claim gold at the Olympics.

Wiggins has been by far the best backed in Sky Bet's Sports Personality betting and attracted 39 per cent of the votes in a poll on skysports.com.

The 12-candidate shortlist contains arguably the strongest set of contenders in the award's history, with world number one and PGA Championships winner Rory McIlroy the only nominee not to have a gold medal to their name.

With 16 per cent of the votes, Andy Murray has attracted the second most votes after finishing runner up at Wimbledon, landing silver and gold at the Olympics and then ending Britain's 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam singles champion at the US Open.

However, the Scot is only third favourite in the betting at a price of 15/2 with Mo Farah ahead at 4/1.

Farah captured the hearts of the nation with his double gold at the Games as he won the 10,000m and the 5,000m, cementing his status as a national icon with his signature 'Mobot' celebration.

Of the five women named on the shortlist, Jessica Ennis has attracted the most votes with 10 per cent after romping to gold in the heptathlon.

With Ennis rated as a 8/1 chance, Sky Bet go 7/1 that one of the female contenders will win the award, with Ellie Simmonds (50/1), Nicola Adams (150/1), Sarah Storey (200/1) and Katherine Grainger (200/1) all considered significant outsiders.

McIlroy (80/1) is the one nominee that sits considerably higher in the voting than the betting, attracting just below 10 per cent of the votes following another stellar year.

The Northern Irishman played a significant part in Europe's remarkable Ryder Cup comeback win while also winning seven individual competitions over the course of the year.
