Federer will now meet seventh seed Milos Raonic after the Canadian secured a hard fought 7-5 7-6 (9/7) victory over Spanish 11th seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

Novak Djokovic was also a straight-sets winner against a Frenchman on Thursday evening, knocking out Gael Monfils 6-3 7-6 (7/2) after one hour and 32 minutes on court.

Monfils hammered down 12 aces but was still unable to get the better of the world No 1 in their 11th meeting. Djokovic had issues on his own serve, but was still broken just once as he set up a showdown with Andy Murray.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Tomas Berdych moved a step closer to clinching his place at the ATP World Tour Finals in London after easing into the last eight with a comfortable win over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

The 29-year-old Czech, chasing a third title of the season, secured a 7-5 6-3 victory to set up a clash with South African 14th seed Kevin Anderson - who knocked out third seed Stan Wawrinka - for a place in the semi-finals.

Fourth seed David Ferrer – a former champion at the tournament in the French capital - kept his quest on track to reach a second straight Paris final as he swept aside Spanish compatriot Fernando Verdasco 6-1 6-2.

He needs to reach the semi-finals to guarantee his spot in the season-ending event in London and will next face Japan’s sixth seed Kei Nishikori, who knocked out France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1 4-6 6-4 to progress.
