Bernard Tomic: Came through in four sets
Bernard Tomic gave the Melbourne fans something to cheer about with a battling victory over Daniel Brands at the Australian Open.
The outspoken 20-year-old, who has claimed he will break into the world's top 10 this season, bounced back from losing the first set to win 6-7 (7-4) 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-8).
Tomic, the world No 43, was forced to fight all the way against the German qualifier, though, before eventually prevailing with his eighth match-point opportunity.
Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga breezed through with a straight-sets victory over Go Soeda 6-3 7-6 (7-1) 6-3, while there were also convincing wins for Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Cilic, ranked 12, saw off Rajeev Ram 7-5 6-2 6-4 t set up a third-round tie with the 21st seed Andreas Seppi, who outlasted Denis Istomin 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-7 (7-3) 7-6 (7-3) 6-2.
Raonic, the 13th seed from Canada, overcame Jamie Baker's conqueror Lukas Rosol 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 6-3, while No 17 seed Kohlschreiber beat Amir Weintraub 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Gilles Simon survived a scare as the 14th seed recovered to beat Jesse Levine 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
There was a minor upset, though, as Jeremy Chardy overcame 30th seed Marcel Granollers 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-2.
