Andy Murray got his Australian Open challenge off to a near-perfect start with a straight-sets victory over Robin Haase.

The Scot, looking to follow up his maiden Grand Slam success at the US Open last year, came out firing on all cylinders before slipping into cruise control on Rod Laver Arena.

And despite the odd minor hiccup here and there along the way - he was guilty of making 20 unforced errors - Murray will have been pleased overall with his display in the 6-3 6-1 6-3 victory.

After both players had held serve at the start of the match, Murray rattled off five games on the bounce to take a commanding lead.

Haase, though, refused to let the British No 1 have things his own way and, having wasted five break chances in the sixth game, hit back in the eighth to give himself hope.

Murray, though, duly broke the Dutchman for a third time to take the opening set.

Haase remained undeterred and began to push Murray further back on the court, however the third seed coped seemed to enjoy the work our - breaking in games four and six en route to the second set.

Murray made it three breaks in a row as he moved 1-0 up in the third set before he consolidated to win his seventh successive game.

Haase, who had won four of the seven sets in previous meetings with the Scot, stopped the rot in the third game - and although Murray secured a double break, the Dutch man hit back immediately.

Murray, though, broke to love in the eighth game to wrap up a convincing win.

Murray will now play Joao Sousa in the second round after the Portuguese beat John-Patrick Smith 6-4 6-1 6-4.
