Andy Murray's form at the Madrid Open surpassed his level of performance at Grand Slams, says Sky Sports pundit Mark Petchey.
Murray beat Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-2 in the Madrid Open final to complete a successful week on the clay courts in Spain.
He is unbeaten since he married Kim Sears and wrote on the Sky Sports camera 'Marriage works' after his win on Sunday.
The Scot inflicted upon Nadal his heaviest defeat on clay since 2004 and there is fresh hope that Murray can win the French Open.
There had been fears that Murray may not be able to continue his Roland Garros preparations in Rome this week, but Petchey insists he should be able to play in the Italian capital.
Clearly it was the best week he (Murray) has had on a clay court, but arguably his best week ever.
"He’s already had a hit in Rome," said Petchey. "He is going to have a hit this afternoon; he is going to make a decision after that particular hit. He said after his first hit, he feels pretty decent.
"He's very keen to get some matches at sea level because obviously in Madrid there is a bit of altitude. I think the signs are quite positive he is going to play.
"We are playing in the Eternal City this week - maybe this was Andy's Sistine Chapel. For me, the week that he played... I know a lot of people will disagree because they will say winning a Slam is more important - the US and Wimbledon - and say he must have played better. But I thought the week in Madrid was the best week I have seen him play, regardless of this.
"Clearly it was the best week he has had on a clay court, but arguably his best week ever."
