Czech star named player of the year after breakthrough campaign

Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been named the WTA Player of the Year for the first time. The world number two claimed the honour after a breakthrough season that saw her win her first Grand Slam title at SW19, beating Maria Sharapova. The 21-year-old also helped Czech Republic to their first Fed Cup title and won the season-ending WTA Championships at Istanbul. "This season has been simply a dream," Kvitova said. "It is an incredible honor to win the Player of the Year award and join the ranks of some of the best players that have ever played the sport, especially Martina Navratilova. "I will always cherish the 2011 season and look forward to building on it."
