Urszula Radwanska: Knocked out sixth seed
Poland's Urszula Radwanska pulled off a shock as she dumped sixth seed Daniela Hantuchova out of the WTA Mercury Insurance Open.
Hantuchova had been handed a wild card for the event, but failed to make the most of it as Radwanska ran out a 6-4 7-5 winner against the Slovakian in their first-round clash in Carlsbad.
Earlier, Varvara Lepchenko warmed up for the Olympics with a convincing victory over fellow American Nicole Gibbs.
The Uzbekistan-born 26-year-old, who became a naturalised US citizen five years ago and will play singles along with Serena and Venus Williams and Christina McHale in London, outclassed Gibbs from the outset and cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win.
World number 10 Marion Bartoli is the top seed in the tournament and was handed a first-round bye along with Dominika Cibulkova, Jelena Jankovic and Nadia Petrova.
Fourth-seeded Russian Petrova will open her campaign against Alexa Glatch, who defeated fellow American Lauren Davis 6-3 6-2 on Monday.
In other first-round action, Japan's Misaki Doi battled from a set down to overcome Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-7 (6/8) 6-1 6-3.
