Britain's Kyle Edmund has been forced to withdraw from his French Open second round match against Australian 29th seed Nick Kyrgios with a stomach injury.

"Unfortunately I have had to withdraw from my second round match here at Roland Garros due to an abdominal injury," Edmunds wrote on Twitter.

"On doctors advice and to avoid making the injury worse I have withdrawn to recover and prepare for the grass."

The 20-year-old clinched his first Grand Slam victory after he beat Frenchman Stephane Robert in five sets to ensure three British players reached the next round at Roland Garros.

Edmund overcame both cramp and a vociferous French crowd on Court 7 to win his first ever five-setter 2-6 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-2.

It was the first time since 2006 that a British man other than Andy Murray has won in the main draw and the first time in four years three players have made it to round two, after Murray and Heather Watson also made it through.

An official tournament statement read: "British player Kyle Edmund, scheduled to play Australian Nick Kyrgios tomorrow in the second round, has withdrawn from the tournament due to an abdominal muscle lesion."

Edmund is expected now to focus on getting fit for the grass-court season and Wimbledon, where he has lost in the first round for the past two years.

Kyrgios will now have more time to prepare for a third-round clash with either third seed Murray or Portugal's Joao Sousa who play third on Court Philippe Chatrier on Thursday.
