Andy Murray expertly mastered the big-serving Kevin Anderson as he claimed his 500th ATP Tour win in Miami, said Leif Shiras.

The Scot was made to work for his landmark win, dropping the second set before battling back for a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory in the fourth round.

From the start, Murray attacked Anderson’s serve from inside the baseline, but also used his guile from the back of the court to dictate rallies.

Sky Sports expert Shiras was impressed with his tactical awareness as he overcame a potential stumbling block on the way to the quarter-finals.

“He is a top five player in the world, who should be in the mix at the very top of the game,” said American.

“He’s working to be there, but has the talent to do it, because he can win a point in so many ways and plays the kind of tennis that can really distract opponents.

“We talked about this variation, look at someone like Bernard Tomic, who really needs to get the right mix of variation and spin, pace, drop shots, and attack.

“But I think for guys like Andy and maybe even Bernard to some degree, they struggle to get the right mix when it comes to being aggressive. How can I impose myself when I’m still managing my risk and not giving my opponent too much?

“I think Andy got the mix right today. He was coming forward at the right times. It’s not natural for him to do that, because of his game style and how he interprets the game, but when he gets the mix right, it’s something to behold.”
