ATP Erste Bank Open: Ivo Karlovic wins through but Guillermo Garcia-Lopez loses

Sixth seed Ivo Karlovic came from behind to win through to the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna on Tuesday, but seventh seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez exited.

Karlovic, of Croatia, lost the first set to Argentina’s Federico Delbonis on the tie break, going down 6-7 (1/7).

But he gained his revenge on tie-breaks in the next two sets – winning 7-6 (11/9) 7-6 (7/2) – to progress.

Spanish seventh seed Garcia-Lopez was shocked, losing 6-3 6-4 to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.

Struff's compatriot Benjamin Becker had to come from behind against Victor Hanescu, eventually beating the Romanian 4-6 6-1 6-3.

Home favourite Jurgen Melzer also had to come from behind before seeing-off Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos 3-6 6-4 6-3, while Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci beat Paul-Henri Mathieu, of France, 6-1 6-4.

There was a close contest between Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and Germany’s Daniel Brands, with Pospisil finally winning 6-3 6-7 (3/7) 7-6 (7/2).
