Davis Cup: French Tennis Federation choose clay surface for final with Switzerland

The Davis Cup final between France and Switzerland will be staged on a clay surface, the French Tennis Federation announced on Monday.

As hosts, the French team have the honour of choosing the surface for the November 21-23 event at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille.

The stadium, which is the home of French Ligue 1 football club Lille, has a retractable roof so the event will take place indoors.

The venue has a capacity of over 50,000, but for the final a court will be set up at one end to make use of the permanent seating in conjunction with temporary stands. The expected capacity will be a minimum of 27,000 spectators.

World No 3 Roger Federer and world No 4 Stanislas Wawrinka lead a Swiss team competing in their first final in 22 years as they look to capture the country’s maiden Davis Cup title.

The French team, who are headlined by World No 12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and World No 16 Gael Monfils, are looking to win the competition for the 10th time, with their last victory coming in 2001.
