Lucia Safarova showed her fighting qualities to overcome Madison Keys at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Safarova needed two-and-a-quarter hours to book her place in the second round, with the world No 15 coming from a set down to win 6-7 (7-4) 6-4 6-2.

The seventh seed had served for the first set when leading 5-4 but Keys gained a timely break before sneaking the tie-break.

The Czech, though, moved through the gears and got stronger as the match went on to eventually see off the challenge of Keys.

Garbine Muguruza and Elina Svitolina are also through to the second round after their respective straight-set wins over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova.
