Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva caused a second-round upset at the Coupe Banque Nationale in Quebec by upsetting third seed Kristina Mladenovic.
In a gruelling contest, the experienced world No 195 Karatantcheva, who was born Bulgarian and switched nationalities five years ago, came through a 5-7 6-4 7-5 victor to earn a quarter-final place.
There was no danger of German fifth seed Julia Goerges going the same way as Mladenovic. She cruised to a 6-2 6-2 win against American Melanie Oudin.
Fourth seed Shelby Rogers had to come from behind to beat qualifier Asia Muhammad.
On paper at least, the all-American clash pointed to a straightforward victory for Rogers, who at world No 79 is ranked 213 places higher than her opponent, but with all three sets going to a tie-break, it was anything but.
Muhammad took the match to her compatriot, winning the opening set, before Rogers hit back to level. It was then Rogers who held her nerve to clinch a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Germany's Tatjana Maria was also taken to three sets before seeing off Madison Brengle to advance to the last eight.
The American made a blistering start to the match, taking the first set, but Maria regained her composure to clinch the next two and win 4-6 6-4 6-0.
Andrea Hlavackova made short work of Poland's Paula Kania in the final first-round encounter, winning 6-3 6-0.
The 28-year-old Czech world No 193 fired down six aces to down Kania, a player ranked 26 places above her.
